Dr. Iñaki Prado Checa

Dr. Iñaki is our board-certified veterinary cardiologist. He earned his veterinary degree from the University of León (Spain) in 2013, where he also completed a rotating internship. He then moved to the United Kingdom, gaining invaluable experience as a general practitioner and as an emergency veterinarian.

His pursuit of advanced training led him to complete a rotating internship at the University of Cambridge, followed by a cardiopulmonary internship at the University of Edinburgh. During this time, he also achieved a Certificate in Advanced Veterinary Practice in Veterinary Cardiology.

Dr. Iñaki subsequently completed a three-year cardiology residency at the Royal Veterinary College in London and Langford Vets at the University of Bristol. Upon completion, he obtained his Diploma in Veterinary Cardiology (DipACVIM).

Throughout his residency, Dr. Iñaki was actively involved in advanced cardiac procedures, including mitral valve repair under cardiopulmonary bypass and transapical edge-to-edge repair (TEER). He has also completed several externships at leading human cardiology centers, further expanding his expertise in heart disease and cardiac surgery.

His clinical interests include heart surgery – both open-heart and minimally invasive (keyhole) procedures, as well as treatment of arrhythmias, heart failure management, and Boxer cardiomyopathy. Dr. Iñaki is dedicated to delivering the highest standard of care and is passionate about improving the quality of life and outcomes for pets with heart disease.

Outside of work, he enjoys surfing, traveling, and Latin dancing.

The Baby Heart Clinic

Did you know that up to 2% of puppies and kittens are born with a heart murmur? While some murmurs are harmless, others can indicate serious heart conditions.

At Veterinary Specialists of Sydney, we know how important early intervention is. That’s why we’ve introduced the Baby Heart Clinic, led by our Dr Inaki.

If your puppy or kitten is under 1 year old, has a heart murmur but is otherwise healthy, they may be eligible for a specialist echocardiogram and report for a heavily discounted rate.

This quick and non-invasive ultrasound helps us determine whether their murmur is something they’ll grow out of or a sign of a more serious condition. With this knowledge, we can guide you on the best next steps for their health and future.
